Head Coach Job Description

Reports to: Management Team

Salary: £30,000 per annum

Employment Type: Full-time (salaried)

Hours: Approx. 35–40 hours per week, split between coaching, admin, and leadership duties (flexitime)

 

Role Overview:

The Head Coach is responsible for leading the coaching team, managing all programming, overseeing internal development, and maintaining operational flow. You’ll ensure the member experience is consistently excellent across all classes and that coaches are supported, held accountable, and actively progressing in their craft.

 

This is a leadership role that blends hands-on coaching with team oversight, admin, and strategic input. You’ll work closely with the owners to bring the vision of the gym to life—day in, day out.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Group Coaching & Standards

    •    Deliver 15–20 hours of group coaching per week (primarily 06:00, 07:00, 08:00, and 12:30)

    •    Set the standard for attentive, inclusive, and technically sound coaching

    •    Receive a quarterly CPD allowance (£400) to support ongoing development

 

Programming Oversight

    •    Lead programming across all class types and update weekly to align with member needs

    •    Build structured, purposeful lesson plans for each session (stimulus, flow, points of performance)

    •    Share weekly programming summaries with coaches to ensure alignment

    •    Work with the content team to share monthly programming updates with the wider member base

 

Coach Development & Leadership

    •    Lead monthly 1-on-1 development meetings with each coach to review goals and performance

    •    Host quarterly team workshops focused on standards, peer feedback, and movement coaching

    •    Build and maintain the coaching development framework (SOPs, playbooks, scorecards)

    •    Support the hiring and onboarding process for new coaches

 

Operational Support

    •    Manage weekly/monthly class rota, handling cover requests and time-off properly

    •    Support the Member Success & Sales team in onboarding new members when required

    •    Keep coaching SOPs up to date and aligned with our evolving systems and standards

 

Communication & Team Integration

    •    Act as the link between the coaching team and management, relaying performance and feedback

    •    Liaise with sales to stay informed on member conversion trends, trial feedback, and sign-ups

Required Qualifications:

    •    CrossFit Level 2 Trainer Certificate (CF-L2) (minimum requirement)

    •    Minimum 2-3 year of group coaching experience, preferably in CrossFit or functional fitness environments

    •    Demonstrated ability to lead high-quality classes during early morning and mid-day time slots

Preferred Experience:

    •    Previous experience programming or adapting group training cycles

    •    Experience delivering classes to a wide range of abilities and modifying stimulus accordingly

    •    Familiarity with CRM systems used in gym or coaching environments

    •    Exposure to team leadership, coaching development, or CPD facilitation

    •    Proactive & Accountable: You take ownership of your role, stay ahead of tasks, and don’t need micromanaging to get things done

    •    Tech-Confident: You’re comfortable using CRM systems, Google Workspace, and tracking tools

    •    Always Developing: You regularly pursue CPD and are driven to grow in your coaching, leadership, and impact
